Gyroscopes are used in many modern devices, including inertial guidance systems, stabilizers for ships and airborne vehicles, and other devices that measure or help to maintain orientation. Use the T-handled rip cord to get maximum speed and the gyroscope will seem to defy gravity, since the orientation of its axis is unaffected by tilting or rotating the mounting. A more precise, easy-to-use version of the original toy gyroscope, first made in 1917.
